Greg Biffle Wins at Kansas Speedway

By Admin | October 1, 2007

What a crazy race at the Kansas Speedway yesterday. Whoa!

The race ended up finishing about 6 hours and 15 minutes after it began. There were two rain delays due to a couple of fast moving thunderstorms that swept the area and the race ended up being shortened due to darkness since there are no lights at the track. I almost hate to say it, but as much as I love Nascar racing, I’m kind of glad that I didn’t go.

The second rain delay almost ended the race under a red flag with Tony Stewart in the lead and nearly out of gas. He and his crew were hoping Nascar would call the race, but as is typical for Kansas weather this time of year, the storm passed quickly and the race was again under the green flag in a little over an hour.

The startup after the second red flag was a little crazy with a collision on the first lap of the restart. Tony Stewart hit the rear of Martin Truex Jr. which shoved him into Matt Kenseth causing both to crash. Stewart’s car only had left front fender damage but he chose not to pit. On the restart, his tire began rubbing the fender. Several laps later, his tire blew and because he slowed down very quickly, Kurt Busch ran into the back of him causing another crash. At this point, Nascar shortened the race again to 210 laps due to impending darkness.

The points standings for the drivers in the chase in the cup took a dramatic turn for the worse since many were caught up in much of the wreckage. The top 3 are only separated by a few points, but it falls drastically from there.

The end of the race came when Juan Pablo Montoya blew a tire with only 3 laps to go. This would have normally triggered a green, white checker finish however because darkness was falling fast, Nascar ended the race under the caution flag. Since the field is frozen once the caution flag is thrown, Greg Biffle was the race winner.

He had to defend his victory though. As Greg was following behind the pace car, his own car began sputtering so he shut the engine off and coasted across the finish line. Many were upset that he won because Clint Bowyer (hometown favorite) and Jimmie Johnson crossed the finish line before him.

However, since the field is frozen when the caution comes out, Biffle had already been declared the race winner.

As I stated at the top of this article, it was definitely a crazy day at the Kansas Speedway.
